Clean and Simple Sunday #25-2016

Hi, after a brief break, we are back on schedule.  I will be posting on the blog for the time being while Theresa takes a little time off.  I hope I can keep this blog as well as she did and know that the design team Theresa put together does an awesome job.  All I have to do is post their great creations.

This week we will welcome new designers Kimberly and Robbie to the design team.

Today's post is all about the Flowers, so let's see what Kimberly and Robbie did.

First is Kimberly -

This card is full of supplies from Catherine Pooler's Stamp of Approval (SOA) goodness.
I used the Birthday Journal Card Die from Sugar Pea Designs to cut the scalloped rectangle with black cardstock.  Then I used the stitched rectangle die to cut the white cardstock.  The beautiful floral/leave image is from Gina K. (SOA Beautiful World Collection)  The image is stamped with Hero Arts Ombre Neon Ink (chartreuse to blue).
The sentiment is from the same SOA collection, CAS-UAL Fridays "All About You"  stamp set.  Assemble the card as shown and add sequin and pearl embellishments.  Adhere to a A2 size card base.

Now up is Robbie -

I love CAS cards and I just got some new flower stamps.  All supplies are from Stampin’ Up.  I began by stamping my flower using the Bunch of Blossoms stamp set.  Each petal is individual so you stamp the first petal, then turn your card 90 degrees and stamp the petal again, then rotate 90 degrees and stamp the petal, and finally rotate 90 degrees and stamp the last petal – you are working in a circle.  This is also a 3 step stamp set so I stamped the bottom layer with Wisteria Wonder, the second layer with Perfect Plum, and the outline layer with Elegant Eggplant.  I took my Basic rhinestones and used the largest size and put in the center of the flower.  I then used the middle size rhinestone to form a ring around the large rhinestone.  I used the sentiment from the same set and stamped it in Elegant Eggplant.  Using the Tags & Labels framelits and my Big Shot I cut out the sentiment and a larger size of the same shape from Elegant Eggplant.  The sentiment was attached to larger shape and then added to the card front in the lower left hand corner with Stampin’ Dimensionals.  To finish off the card I wrapped Some Elegant Eggplant baker’s twine around the top of the card twice and tied a bow.  My card was complete! ~ Robbie

Both are great cards and I love how the clean look of each is perfect.  We will see more great designs tomorrow.  - Denise

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Wrap-Up

We have a few tips to share about using embossing powders and glitter with your stencils
or just in general.

Have a Swiffer dusting cloth nearby.
This is the perfect way to clean up stray powder or glitter.
You can even cut them in half or thirds to make then go further.

Use an anti-static tool or bag BEFORE you stencil to make sure you don't get stray
embossing powder in places you don't want it.

Store your embossing powder in a cool, dry place.
EP does get old and you get what you pay for. See the examples below as a testament to this.

As you can see in the pictures above, the colored embossing powder cards all have "issues."
This colored embossing powder happens to be Martha Stewart brand that is probably 15 years old.
It did not melt well! It was chunking and as you can see in some areas there was little or no color.
The metallics are all from Ranger and are new (less than a year old) powders and they melted beautifully. So my suggestion is to test your powders before you start your project and to throw out the old and use new ones for the best results.

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 2...Day 3

We are heating up the stencil event with a few more embossed and glittered stencil creations.

This background was created with light modeling paste with a Recollections stencil.  I embossed with Recollections Pesto Pearl embossing powder for a shimmer effect on the vines. ~Alicia

No, no, no... no more glitter! Lol!  There is more on the carpet, the table, in my glass of tea (no, seriously) than on the card!  I had a star stencil from Ranger and I thought it would look cool in red, white and blue.  Duh; 3 times the glitter!!!  I masked the stencil and inked with Versa Mark ink.  The glitter is red, white and blue from Recollections and is heat set.  I colored the star with Tim Holtz Distress inks Mustard Seed and Salty Ocean and spritzed with water to give it texture.  I gilded the edge of of the base and a tail from the star to try to make it look like a sparkler.  Some silver sequins and a date stamp finished it off.  Now to drag out the Kirby... ~ Gracie

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 2...Day 2

More glitter? More embossing? More stencils?

Yes, please!

Stencil – Tim Holtz scribbles
Sentiment – CAS-ual Fridays ‘frankly’
Glitter – Misc. pink & gold
Process – I covered my card stock with double sided sticky film, laid the stencil over the top, added the pink glitter, then removed the stencil and added the gold glitter. I’ll tell you this is a messy technique but so pretty when finished. I used my bone folder to burnish the glitter on the tape then embossed the sentiment onto a strip of black and added it all onto a black card base. ~Tristan

I used different stencils (sorry I forgot to write down which ones) and some
microfine glitter for this two cards. I like the first one best because I used a white based glitter
for the part where I pulled off the stencil. For the second one I used a gold glitter and I don't think the design shows up as well. ~Theresa

Note of warning...be prepared to have glitter everywhere and in your hair for weeks!

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 2

It's time to add some Heat Embossing and Glitter to the stencil party.

I thought that I’d try something different for me. I used ARTplorations Merry Go Round stencil, versamark ink and clear embossing powder to create the background. It resulted in a cool tone on tone type of effect. I used some printed paper scraps to finish off the card. The sentiment is from STAMPlorations Vignette Art Deco Border Builders. ~Sue

I thought I would try a little emboss resist. I took a stamp set that had several smaller stamps and put them on a block.  Covered the stamped area with embossing ink and stamped a piece watercolor card stock. Put embossing powder on the stamped area and heated it with my heat tool.  Took a pink Gelato and spread it lightly all over the background. I used a baby wipe to blend the color and remove any color from the embossed area.  I cut a vase and some flowers from a stamp from My Favorite Things. I glued down the vase and flowers. I stamped and embossed a sentiment onto some vellum, attached to the back of the card front to hide the tape.  I added some little beads from my stash to give it some bling and attached it to a pink card base. ~Paulyne

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 1...Day 3

I'm loving all these awesome double stenciled cards!
We hope you are too.

I got creative on this one and made my own stencil - I ran a laminating sheet through the laminator and cut out a flower border on my Silhouette. I stenciled the first time with Tim Holtz Distress ink Mustard Seed then rotated my stencil and used Spiced Marmalade on whisper white cs.  I added a strip of yellow cs and the birds - they are a Spellbinders die cut.  The sentiment is from the Sizzix Birds and Phrases set. The sentiment was stamped with Memento Luxe Ink and clear embossing powder.  I did not use my MISTI and I can tell - it's not as dark as I like!  I added some black metal dots and mounted it on a yellow cs base.  I will definitely be making more of my own stencils!
~ Gracie

I used the Harleen Stencil from Stamp of Approval by Catherine Pooler to
create these three cards. I just loved how they turned out.
I stenciled it once in one set of colors and then moved the stencil and stenciled again
with the colors in a different order or completely new colors.
All inks are Ranger Distress Inks. ~Theresa

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 1...Day 2

Double stenciling can be done with the same stencil, as
we saw Kim do yesterday or you can use more than one stencil.

Let's see what today's designers did.

I cut this stencil on my Explore using the cartridge Artfully Sent by CTMH.  I used three colors of CTMH inks – Sky, Indian Corn Blue and Outdoor Denim.  I started on one end with the lighter color and blended into the medium and then the darker colors.  After that dried, I moved the stencil over until I was overlapping the circles and did the colors the same way again.  It ended up forming a sort of diagonal line.  I used the medium color to make a mat for the sentiment background.
~Denise Sayers

This stencil was cut on my Explore using a cut that was already set up to be two steps.  Usually you would just cut it from two different colors, but it worked well as two stencils that work together.  The cartridge was called Creative Cards.  I first used a blending tool and rubbed a Distress Ink called Mustard Seed on card stock using the stencil with the most openings, after that I lined up the second stencil over the first and did the same thing using Crushed Olive Distress Ink.  The same inks were used to make the background mat.   A quick sentiment and the card was done. - Denise Sayers

Stencil – MFT – st31
Sentiment – Hero arts ‘awesome’
Distress Ink – picket fences, pine needles, cracked pistachio, evergreen bough & iced spruce
Process – I laid the stencil over some crumb cake cardstock, sponged the picket fences ink then moved the stencil over just a bit and then sponged on the other 4 colours giving a shadow effect. I stamped the sentiment, wrapped a bit of gold thread around and mounted it on a black card base. ~Tristan

Using the Large Grid Stencil from MIX-ables Stencils I applied Old Olive ink from Stampin’ Up to the back of the stencil.  I spritzed the stencil with water and set it on my watercolor paper and held it down.  I then used Bermuda Bay ink from Stampin’ Up and a make up sponge to apply ink to the stencil.  I spritzed the water color paper again and removed the stencil.  When the watercolor paper was dry I attached it to my Basic Black card base using Tear & Tape both from Stampin’ Up.  My sentiment is from the Kinda Eclectic stamp set and is stamped in Bermuda Bay ink onto white card stock all from Stampin’ Up.  I created layers of Bermuda Bay then Old Olive card stock, both from Stampin’ Up, and attached my sentiment to the layers.  The sentiment is added to the center of the card front using Stampin’ Dimensionals.

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 3 Challenge 1

Today's Stencil Challenge is Double Stenciling/Two-step Stenciling.

For this card, I used a stencil from the Stamp of Approval kit.  On Whisper White card stock, I placed the stencil and applied Tumbled Glass distress ink then I shifted the stencil and applied Dried Marigold distress ink.  Using the diamond shape from the stencil as inspiration, I created a panel on which I placed the greeting from Stampin' Up's My Digital Studio, color matched to the ink, double-matted it and placed it on coordinating card stock I had in my stash.  I added the greeting with Dimensionals and inserted a few flourishes I cut on my Silhouette just to add a little something.   I cut the Whisper White panel a little short so I could add a thin strip of card stock across the bottom.  I printed the whimsical sentiment on the inside, again color matched and placed on a mat.

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 2 Wrap-Up

Well it's been quite a week of stenciling.

We've gone from smooth mediums, such as spray mists and alcohol inks and watercolors to
masking and partial stenciling.

Today I've got a few more cards for you featuring these techniques.

I stenciled a few of the trefoils from a Hero Arts stencil and lightly spritzed with perfect pearls mist (homemade) and I really like this one. You can still see the stenciled design but it is a little artistic now.

These were my first time using my new Zig Clean Color Real Brush Markers.
WOW do they spread when misted.
This card I actually stenciled the flower in the corner but when I misted it with perfect pearls mist (homemade) it just bled into a watercolor mess, losing the flower altogether.
So I dried it, then added back the stencil and used a baby wipe
to remove the color from the stenciled area.

So don't think you have to use the entire stencil every time.  Use it as a guide to stamp with or selectively stencil only part of it.

Use any medium you have from markers to paints and stains.

For this card I added the Ranger Distress Inks direct to paper then I laid on the my checkerboard stencil and used a baby wipe to "stencil"

I love the very subtle effect of the one below.

I water colored using Ranger Distress Inks and then added the stencil

and left it to dry (much like Maureen did in her video).
The sentiment is from a set by Jillibean Soup. The sequins are by Mint Owl Studio.

I started playing and couldn't quit.

I used Heidi Swapp Color Shine sprays in pink and gold and peach and a Prima stencil.

I sprayed the first card, then grabbed a second piece of paper and turned the stencil on to it and rubbed the remaining spray mist onto the piece. Thus giving me two for one.

I did it a second time and so I got 4 cards in a small amount of time.

I also used my spray mists to color my wooden embellishments.

That's probably enough cards for one day, don't you think?

We truly hope you are enjoying this Stencil Extravaganza and will
get out your stencils and look at them in a new way or pick one up the next time you hit the craft store or consider making one using your dies or diecutter.

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 2 Challenge 2...Day 3

The designers have been having a blast working with
stencils this month and we've got a few more cards for you featuring
Masking/Partial Stenciling.

Love this technique!   Can be C&S or really detailed.  I went for C&S.  I don't know the name of my stencil but I am pretty sure it is from Crafter's Workshop.  I blended Tea Dye and Vintage Photo Tim Holtz Distress inks on whisper white cs after masking off a rectangle for my sentiment (with a post it note).  I added the flower die cut  (can't remember source) and a swap abilities embossed die cut butterfly.   The stamp is from a Hampton Arts set.  I used Memento Richard Cocoa ink and clear embossing powder. Added some bling and mounted it on a whisper white cs base. ~ Gracie

Here's the card I created using masks made from a butterfly die.
I cut the butterflies out of masking paper and applied it to my paper, sponged with Ranger Distress Inks then stenciled them.
I then used the die cuts to mask off the butterflies while I stenciled the trees.
I added the bodies with my black Copic Marker.
I'm not sure I like the results but, I'll try again.  ~Theresa

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 2 Challenge 2...Day 2

More Masking/Partial Stenciling today.

I cut this stencil using my Explore. The cartridge used was Gypsy Wanderings.  I kept the cut-out part to use as a mask.  I first put the stencil over a white piece of paper and taped off the flower part with painters tape to leave only the stem and leaf exposed.  I used Distress Ink (mowed lawn) to color that part.  I then put the tape over the stem and petals and used Distress Ink (Fossilized Amber) on that part.  Finally I taped off all of the flower except for the petals and used Distress Ink (Shuttered Straw) on those.  When that was dry, I taped the cutout of the flower over what I had colored making sure that there wasn’t tape where I wanted to put the second flower.  I then positioned the second flower to overlap the first and repeated the coloring process in the same way I did the first.  After I looked at it, I decided that it was a little plain and ended up tearing most of the paper from around the design and mounting it on a wood-grain paper from Altenew.  I just love that paper as the embossing on it is very fine and really looks like wood. The sentiment is from a stamp set called Happy Healing by A Jillian Vance Design.  I tied a piece of twine around it using a tip I read where you put little notches on the side using a hole punch.  It helps to keep the twine in place.  This was all popped up on foam and place on a kraft card. – Denise Sayers

Stencil - Tim Holtz scribbles
Sentiment – PTI ‘wet paint’
Distress inks – mustard seed & spiced marmalade
Process – I die cut a circle from a card front and used it as a mask. I laid the stencil over the hole and sponged on the ink. I then removed the mask and stamped the sentiment on top and layered it on a yellow card base. ~Tristan

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 2 Challenge 2

Our next Stencil Extravaganza Challenge:
Masking/Partial Stenciling

Let's see what the designers came up with.

I created a circle mask to cover the card front. Using a striped stencil from Michaels, I added ink with ink blending tools and distress inks (spiced marmalade, ripe persimmon and picked raspberry). I cut the sentiment with Simon Says STAMP thanks die and covered the die cut with Wink of Stella for some sparkle. To complete the card, I added three sequins. ~Sue

Using the Tim Holtz Flourish stencil, I stenciled with Shaded Lilac and Chipped Sapphire distress inks, overlapping the two in the upper right and lower left of a panel of Whisper White card stock.  The Distress Inks blend so well, they are perfect for this technique.  In the opening, I stamped a flower using the Butterfly Basics set from Stampin' Up and colored it with various SU markers.  I used the Curvy Corners Trio Punch on the upper left and matted it on a color coordinatedcard stock on which I used the Corner Chomper.  I created the greeting using SU's My Digital Studio and cut it in my Silhouette with to complement the corner punch and double matted it, rounding the corners of both mats.  I added a few sequins from Pretty Pink Posh to give a bit of bling.  The sentiment is also from My Digital Studio.  ~Kim from Katydid Cards

Stop back tomorrow for more great cards.

July Stencil Extravaganza Week 2 Challenge 1...Day 3

It's day 3 of the Smooth Creative Mediums challenge.

I went a little crazy with this one. I'm just warning you ahead of time.

I've always loved playing with my alcohol inks, so I sat down last night and had to play with them and some new stencils my crafty secret sister (from another group) sent me.

I might have gotten a tad bit carried away.

Series #1
I used Tim Holtz Glossy Paper and Ranger Alcohol Inks. I mixed a few colors on the felt blending pad and pounced on the stencil. DO NOT RUB in a circular motion like you would with distress inks. This just turns the colors to mud.

This one is on plain cardstock, made while cleaning my stencil and blending tool.

For this one I used only one color of ink on the felt blending tool at a time.

Series #2

This one is on plain cardstock and was made while cleaning my stencil.

is on plain cardstock, still had a lot of the ink and silver additive on my tool and didn't want to waste it so I used the plain cardstock that I had down underneath my glossy to catch the drips.

Series #3

Plain cardstock again, cleaning stencil.

This one too, plain cardstock, stencil cleaning.

Series #4

This is what the piece looked like after applying the ink
directly to the paper from the bottle, no blending tool.

I used a plain piece of cardstock to "blot" up the excess ink. Don't worry it won't go to waste.

I then added my stencil and pounced on Pearl Alcohol Ink Additive.

OH MY GOODNESS I'm not sure this card will ever be sent to anyone.
I just love, love, love how it turned out.

Technically this one doesn't have any stencil used on it, but I made it while making the one above. I had so much ink that I had grabbed a piece of cardstock and blotted the ink. It turned out so cool I had to make a card from it.   See I told you it wouldn't go to waste. LOL
